About the SAG Awards

The Screen Actors Guild Awards only honor actors, thus no nominees for Best Makeup, Screenplay, or Director. SAG is a union that represents working actors in various media forms (movies, television, commercials to name a few). Every year a group of about 2,000 SAG members are randomly selected to choose the nominees in various acting categories. Unlike many other awards shows, the Screen Actors Guild recognizes outstanding individual (Best Actor, Actress) achievement, as well as Ensemble casts. Voting is then opened to all members (over 100,000) of the union. Winners receive a SAG Award, referred to as "The Actor".

Repeat Winners

Taking home a SAG Award for the second year in a row were Julianna Marguelies (The Good Wife), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) and Betty White (last year for Lifetime Achievement and this year for Best Actress, Comedy).

Of course Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo are all repeat winners for their respective movies. All four have also taken home Golden Globes in the same category they received a SAG award in.

What's Up Next?

For movie actors, the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, or the Oscars, air live on Sunday February 27, 2011. Up for awards are SAG award winners Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Christian Bale (The Fighter), and Melissa Leo (The Fighter).

For television actors: Now that the People's Choice Awards and the Golden Globes are over, the next big show is the Primetime Emmy's (Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) which don't air again until late summer.
